Diabetes Hallucination

One of the least discussed problems of diabetics is hallucinations. They are defined as sights, sounds or smells that are actually not there. Hallucinations are characterized by dreams, fantasy and illusions. This condition may indicate a serious problem that is not actually caused by diabetes. These symptoms are usually due to a condition called Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic Nonketonic Syndrome (HHNS). It is seen in both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. It is sometimes caused by an existing infection or illness with swift blood sugar spikes and is noted by extreme thirst and dehydration.

Patients hear or see non-existent voices and music. Confusion, weakness, dry skin, dry mouth and a decrease in vision may be experienced.

Checking blood sugar levels, taking prescribed medication and drinking at least eight glasses of water daily can help prevent diabetic hallucinations.

If patients experience hallucinations consult a doctor but above all Do Not Drive.
