Glucagon Kits for Severe Hypoglycemia
Emergency glucagon kits consist of a 1 mg vial of glucagon and a syringe of diluent. It is also available as a hypopen auto injector and as a nasal powder. The usual dose is 1 mg for adults and children weighing 44 pounds or more and 0.5mg for children weighing less than 44 pounds..
Glucagon may cause vomiting so patient should be placed on their side before administering to prevent choking.
Onset of action is usually 5 to 10 minutes. After 10 minutes another injection may be given if patient is unresponsive.
After patient reaches consciousness and is able to swallow, a carbohydrate liquid should be consumed. Shortly afterwards a carbohydrate and protein snack should be eaten.
