Blood Sugar Testing

Using a blood sugar meter is a very important function in managing diabetes. These are a few ideas to keep in mind while using a meter.

Be sure the meter is clean and has a functioning battery. Make sure the test strips fit the particular machine. Keep the test strip container closed so strips will not become damaged. Clean and dry hands. Hang hands down so blood can enter the finger tips easily. Do not use alcohol, thus avoiding drying out of the fingers. Prick the finger around the edge with a lancet and squeeze a drop of blood onto the test strip. Some machines require putting the strip in the machine first then adding a drop of blood. Some instructions say put drop onto the strip, then insert into the machine. Record results to discuss with your health care provider.
