Embarrassing Question: Why does my breath stink?

Bad breath is a difficult subject to discuss for type 2 diabetics but is an unavoidable occurrence. However in order for a treatment plan to be implemented this subject must be discussed with a physician.

One chief reason for bad breath is dental disease. Signs of dental disease include bleeding gums, sensitive teeth and tender receding gums.

Another reason for bad breath is the production of ketones in the body. Ketones are produced when glucose is not adequate for energy and the body burns fat. The build up of ketones in the blood releases chemicals that produces a fruity odor.

Dental checkups twice per year and good oral hygiene are essential.

Diabetic keto acidosis (high levels of ketones) is a very serious condition. It is accompanied by high blood glucose levels and high levels of ketones in the urine. If this is experienced emergency medical treatment is required.
