Protect Your Feet
In diabetics the proper footwear is essential to prevent nerve injury and risky infection. Serious infections can lead to dangerous issues including amputation. Along with everyday self foot exams proper footwear is essential. Everyone with diabetes may not require special footwear but if extra protection is required then special footwear might be necessary.
Socks and shoes especially designed for diabetics can be effective in keeping feet dry, avoiding irritation and giving feet room. Diabetic shoes and socks can help prevent blisters, calluses and injuries. These shoes can be fitted by a podiatrist. They are usually made of soft stretchable leather or microfiber to ensure easy adjustment if feet swell. Some have extra room to prevent friction. The best shoes are easy to put on.
Diabetic socks are seamless, made of material that decreases moisture and are anti-microbial.
Compression socks are sometimes recommended for patients with poor circulation. Note that compression and diabetic socks are not the same thing. Compression socks are tight around lower legs and feet . A physician can determine which is needed.
