Uncomfortable subjects

There are some questions that diabetics wish to ask their physician but are too afraid to discuss. One such subject is thick ugly toenails. These dark discolorations are usually due to fungal and bacterial growth. Fungal growth affects one in three diabetics. When blood sugar is not well controlled an atmosphere is created that encourages fungal growth, especially on toenails. Poor circulation disables the body’s ability to fight infections. If fungal growth is not treated, a condition called osteomyelitis can develop. This condition is a bone infection. Patients that develop this are at a higher risk for amputation, thus emphasizing the necessity for toenail fungus treatment.
